Senior Backend Engineer
Skills
- Production backend experience with Python and Django (or close equivalent)
- Strong relational modeling and SQL experience (Postgres)
- Experience with caching and in-memory stores (Redis)
- Background jobs/queues experience (Celery, RQ, Kafka workers, or similar)
- REST API design and versioning best practices
- Performance tuning, query optimization, and scalable migrations
- Operational experience: monitoring, alerting, incident response
- Clear written communication for RFCs, PRDs, and decision records
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend services and APIs in Python/Django using Postgres and Redis.
- Own outcomes: refine scope, propose trade-offs, and deliver incremental value quickly and safely.
- Model data, author migrations, tune queries, and implement effective caching strategies.
- Design and manage background processing/queue systems for high-volume workflows.
- Evolve and version API contracts with frontend teams; keep interfaces clear and resilient.
- Improve reliability and performance (timeouts, retries, idempotency, rate limits, pagination, backpressure).
- Implement secure, multi-tenant patterns including auth, RBAC, auditability, and data boundaries.
- Contribute to testing strategy (unit/integration), robust error handling, and graceful failure modes.
- Partner with Support to investigate production issues and convert learnings into prevention and fixes.
- Engage with the open-source community to surface real-world needs and improve developer experience.
- Participate in architecture discussions, perform code reviews, and mentor teammates.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Advanced degree in a relevant field is a plus but not required
