Job Scope: A relief valve engineer's role is to ensure the safe and reliable operation of pressure relief systems in industrial facilities. This involves designing, selecting, and maintaining relief valves, as well as analyzing potential overpressure scenarios and developing mitigation strategies. They also play a crucial role in process safety management by ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Analyze pressure relief scenarios and calculate relief loads for various equipment and systems.
Select appropriate relief valves based on process conditions, fluid properties, and applicable codes.
Size relief devices and effluent handling systems, including flares.
Perform fluid flow and hydraulic studies for relief valve networks.
Update P&IDs (Process and Instrumentation Diagrams) to reflect changes to relief systems.
Conduct engineering studies and troubleshooting of existing relief systems.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
Review vendor documentation for relief valves and related equipment.
Collaborate with process, controls, and other engineering disciplines.
Gather field data and information for relief system design and analysis.
Audit installed relief systems to ensure compliance with design.
Document all calculations, analysis, and work processes in a clear and concise manner.
Education: Bachelor or Master of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Biochemical, or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university is required.
Registration: Professional Engineering registration or CPIP certification is highly preferred.
Experience: This position requires 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in chemical, petroleum, or biochemical process design engineering.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Promotes the culture of working safely and applying safety related concepts into process design.
Basic knowledge of chemical/biochemical process engineering and chemical/biochemical process computer programs.
Familiarity with specifications and installation details of equipment, instrumentation, and piping.
Ability to create accurate process engineering documents from the information provided in vendor equipment data and drawings.
Working knowledge of CAD software preferred, either AutoCAD or Microstation (or both).
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Working knowledge in the use of hydraulic simulation software such as AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow, PIPEPHASE, PIPE-FLO, and/or SiNet.
Working knowledge in the use of process simulation software such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, PRO/II, DYNSIM, HYSYS, CHEMCAD, WinGEMS, ProMax, etc.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time.
