Technical Writer

About Etched

Etched is building the world’s first AI inference system purpose-built for transformers — delivering over 10x higher performance and dramatically lower cost and latency than a B200. With Etched ASICs, you can build products that would be impossible with GPUs, like real-time video generation models and extremely deep & parallel chain-of-thought reasoning agents.

Backed by hundreds of millions from top-tier investors and staffed by leading engineers, Etched is redefining the infrastructure layer for the fastest growing industry in history.

Job Summary

As a Technical Writer at Etched, you’ll work alongside world-class engineers to create customer-facing documentation for our datacenter and server systems. You’ll be responsible for producing highly technical, engineering-focused content — spanning system-level diagnostics, firmware/BIOS installation, debugging, triage workflows, and performance benchmarking.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering and customer success. You’ll transform complex internal processes and tooling into precise, actionable guides that enable customers to install, operate, and optimize Etched systems at scale. Your work will directly impact how our customers interact with the world’s fastest AI inference platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain outbound engineering documentation, including debug guides, system-level diagnostics, BIOS/firmware installation and upgrade procedures, and RMA triage workflows.

  • Write and maintain installation and configuration manuals for Etched datacenter hardware and server deployments, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and ease of execution.

  • Document performance benchmarking workflows, covering setup, test methodology, and analysis for system-level performance validation.

  • Translate engineering tools and software output into polished, customer-presentable documentation, including command references and diagnostic usage guides.

  • Collaborate closely with hardware, software, and field engineering teams to ensure documentation reflects the latest technical and architectural updates.

  • Maintain and version-control content using Git-based documentation pipelines, ensuring consistent review and publishing workflows.

  • Create visuals, block diagrams, and flowcharts to supplement text and enhance technical clarity.

  • Continuously iterate on documentation based on feedback from customers, support teams, and product engineers.

You may be a good fit if you have

  • Experience as a Technical Writer, Engineering Documentation Specialist, or System Engineer with writing responsibilities.

  • A background in engineering, ideally in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.

  • Experience with datacenter or server hardware, including familiarity with BIOS, BMCs, power systems, and rack-level infrastructure.

  • Strong understanding of system-level diagnostics, debugging workflows, and firmware upgrade processes.

  • Hands-on experience with Linux, command-line tools, and performance benchmarking environments.

  • Comfort working directly with hardware and software engineers to capture low-level workflows and technical nuances.

  • Proficiency with documentation and publishing tools such as Markdown, Sphinx, DITA/XML, or Confluence.

  • Excellent written communication skills and an obsessive attention to accuracy, structure, and clarity.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, engineering-driven environment where precision and technical depth matter.

Benefits

  • Full medical, dental, and vision packages, with generous premium coverage

  • Housing subsidy of $2,000/month for those living within walking distance of the office

  • Daily lunch and dinner in our office

  • Relocation support for those moving to West San Jose

Compensation Range

$130,000 – $190,000

How We’re Different

Etched believes in the Bitter Lesson. We think most of the progress in the AI field has come from using more FLOPs to train and run models, and the best way to get more FLOPs is to build model-specific hardware. Larger and larger training runs encourage companies to consolidate around fewer model architectures, which creates a market for single-model ASICs.

We are a fully in-person team in West San Jose, and greatly value engineering skills. We do not have boundaries between engineering and research, and we expect all of our technical staff — including documentation specialists — to contribute deeply to understanding and communicating our systems.
