News Editor, The California Post

Job Description :

The New York Post is heading West – and this is your chance to be a part of history as we open a brand-new newsroom and make a significant investment in Los Angeles. The California Post will be a game changer, putting the people of the Golden State first and holding the powerful to account across digital platforms and print.

This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: The California Post will bring The New York Post’s DNA of powerful, agenda-setting journalism to the West Coast and be a fresh and fearless voice for common sense.

Our focus will also go well beyond hard-hitting news and iconoclastic opinion. The nationally recognized Page Six will bring its sassy and brassy attitude directly to the entertainment capital of the world. The California Post Sports department will deliver muscular coverage of the biggest teams in town, from the locker room to the front office. Our Tech team will reveal the latest innovators and innovations that will shape the nation’s future.

Los Angeles is one of the great cities of the world, and it’s time L.A. – and California at large – had a bold, new voice. The California Post will be that voice. California, here we come!

The California Post is seeking a News Editor to report directly to the Editor-in-Chief and lead our news coverage. This senior role will be vital to the success of our newsroom. The News Editor will oversee our highly skilled reporting team ensuring we have the agenda-setting and audience-driving stories that will be the talk of Los Angeles and California.

We’re looking for someone who loves news, newsrooms and will thrive leading a dedicated, hungry team that is world class in all they do. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to put their stamp on the state.

Our newsroom leader will be someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is passionate, knows how to work with reporters to deliver the content that moves the dial. The leader is a team player, with a proven record of delivering success and a genuine passion to play their role leading one of the most exciting media initiatives in the world. This is a rare chance to make history, to be in at the very start as we build our team together, and begin a new era for California.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead daily news coverage across Los Angeles and California, ensuring The California Post sets the agenda on the stories that matter locally, regionally and nationally.

  • Oversee a team of reporters, providing clear direction and mentorship.

  • Monitor breaking news and make quick, high-impact decisions about coverage priorities.

  • Shape coverage with fresh ideas and unique story angles that distinguish our reporting.

  • Build, develop, and maintain strong sources across politics, government, business, culture, and local affairs.

  • Represent the news team in regular meetings with senior leadership, ensuring alignment on editorial priorities.

  • Collaborate with audience, photo, video, and social teams to maximize reach and impact of coverage across platforms.

  • Maintain the highest editorial standards under pressure, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and speed.

  • Drive newsroom innovation by introducing processes, tools, and strategies that enhance workflow and content quality.

  • Contribute to long-term editorial planning, identifying areas for enterprise reporting and investigative projects.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional journalism experience, with significant editing and newsroom leadership responsibilities.

  • Proven experience managing a newsroom or large editorial team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong track record of breaking news and shaping coverage at the local, state, and national levels.

  • Deep knowledge of Los Angeles and California’s political, cultural, and business landscape, with established sources.

  • Excellent news judgment, headline writing, and copy-editing skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop talent, while holding teams accountable to high standards.

  • Comfort making coverage decisions under intense deadlines without sacrificing quality.

  • Experience collaborating across editorial, design, photo, and digital strategy teams.

  • Vision and initiative to help build a startup newsroom, with the creativity and drive to make The California Post stand out.

At The New York Post we recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company.  As a result, our ranges reflect our good faith estimate to pay fairly as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.

In addition to compensation, the company provides eligible employees a comprehensive and highly competitive benefits package, with a variety of physical health, retirement and savings, caregiving, emotional wellbeing, transportation, and other benefits, including “elective” benefits employees may select to best fit the needs and personal situations of our diverse workforce.

As an equal opportunity employer, the New York Post does not discriminate in hiring or the terms and conditions of employment because of an individual’s race, color, religion, national origin, age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, citizenship or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law. The New York Post will consider the provision of reasonable accommodations to known physical or mental disabilities of otherwise qualified applicants to enable them to participate in our application process and to effectively perform the essential functions of the job, unless doing so would impose an undue financial or operational hardship.
