- Proven engineering people management and ability to grow managers
- Delivered AI/ML or LLM systems from POC to production in partnership with product/platform
- Strong Python and modern AI stack knowledge (model orchestration, vector stores, retrieval patterns)
- MLOps/LLMOps experience: observability, drift detection, prompt/version management
- Design and run experimentation & evaluation plans (offline metrics, human evals, A/B tests)
- Familiarity with security, privacy, governance, and vendor risk for AI
- Excellent written and verbal communication for exec and technical audiences
- Cloud and data platform familiarity (AWS/GCP/Azure, Snowflake/Databricks/BigQuery)
Responsibilities
- Lead a small senior engineering Skunkworks team to run fast, rigorous R&D (POCs, spikes, pilots) and recommend build/buy/partner options.
- Own the internal AI roadmap and orchestrate cross-functional initiatives across Data, Security, Legal/Privacy, IT, Product, Finance, and Ops.
- Define and enforce AI practices: experimentation frameworks, offline/online evals, A/B testing, prompt/memory/version control, and observability.
- Advise executives on AI strategy, opportunity sizing, vendor landscape, TCO, risk/controls, and change-management.
- Scale the function: hire, mentor, and grow senior engineers and future managers; set goals, cadences, and SLAs.
- Drive rapid delivery from concept to pilot to production hand-off with clear success criteria and documentation.
- Partner with product and platform teams to integrate AI components into existing systems at scale.
- Champion compliance and trust: data governance, privacy-by-design, IP/PII handling, model/content safety, and vendor risk management.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science or equivalent experience
- MBA or equivalent business/financial experience is a plus
