Job Description

Due to increasing demand for mechanical and energy engineering expertise, we are seeking an Energy Engineer to join our Denver, CO office.  As an Energy Engineer, you will be responsible for providing engineering analysis and associated designs specific to a variety of project types including commissioning, retrocommissioning, energy audits, energy studies, energy modeling, life cycle cost analysis, carbon accounting, refrigerant analysis, and controls. Work with a team of engineers on a variety of private, public, and federal projects. In addition to working with mechanical and energy engineers, this individual will team with electrical, plumbing/fire protection, civil, structural, and other disciplines to provide full-range services to our local, regional and national clients. In short, provide technical analysis associated with Mechanical requirements to accomplish our commitments. Reports to the Discipline Manager.

 

Dewberry has a large team of MEPS engineers focused on design services for nationwide clients in specialized facility types and specialized design services. Our experience includes high performance buildings, net zero energy design, renewable energy technologies, microgrid and energy storage system design, energy and climate resilience, commissioning, retrocommissioning, energy audits and studies, carbon accounting, energy / carbon master planning, energy benchmarking, building analytics, water conservation, and services related to decarbonization/electrification of the built environment. Our MEPS group contains subject matter experts in leadership roles in international professional organizations such as ASHRAE.  Our repeat clients include universities, and state, local, and federal government agencies, and large global industrial manufacturers, among others. Responsibilities

The Energy Engineer would be expected to provide the following services to effectively and successfully complete projects.

 

  • Commission new construction buildings, including the development and application of functional performance tests and test logs. Lead maintenance staff training.
  • Retrocommission existing buildings including carrying out site walks, BMS trend analysis and review, and utility / meter data analysis. Develop lists of proposed ECMs, facilitate meetings with clients to review options, and write reports.
  • Perform Level 1, 2, and 3 ASHRAE Energy Audits
  • Perform energy studies with diverse scopes of work on a variety of building types
  • Complete detailed whole building energy models. Ability to QA/QC energy models for accuracy.
  • Perform Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA), including the social cost of carbon
  • Carbon accounting
  • Refrigerant analysis
  • Optimize building control sequences, analyze and improve existing building controls, and develop points lists
  • Understand and apply relevant code requirements
  • Technical guidance and quality oversight, including code review, of all project work involving Mechanical engineering.
  • Technical training and development of staff.
  • Assist in establishing and improving standards, practices, guidelines, and specifications for mechanical discipline area.
  • Engineer of Record

Required Skills & Required Experience

    • BS in Mechanical or Energy Engineering from an accredited school. MS preferred.
    • Professional Engineer (PE). Existing license or the ability to obtain licensure in CO within 2 months of hire is preferred.
    • Minimum 8 years of experience
    • Experience should include the ability to:
      • Apply a broad knowledge of principles and practices in the mechanical and energy engineering field
      • Work independently with minimal supervision and direction
      • Work on medium-sized projects or on larger projects with moderate complexity
      • Produce deliverables that meet client goals and timelines while adhering to the project budget
      • Assign tasks to engineers, technicians, and administrative staff
      • Assist in defining scope, budgets, schedules, and proposals.
    • Proficiency with whole building energy modeling software required. Experience using IES VE preferred.
    • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
    • Well-organized, takes good notes, and able to balance competing priorities.
    • Energy Certifications and Accreditations required, such as CEM, CEA, BEMP, LEED AP BD+C. Interest in pursuing additional certifications strongly preferred.

     

    The projected range for this position is $116,000.00 - $150,000.00 annually. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly.
