What We Do
At Terabase Energy, we believe that digitalization and automation will drive the
next wave of innovation and cost reduction in large-scale solar. To unlock the full
potential of this opportunity, Terabase is developing an interconnected software
and construction automation platform. We work alongside project developers,
owners, and engineering & construction firms to support the design, optimization,
and construction of some of the largest solar projects in the world.
Our team is a blend of solar-industry veterans and newcomers—thought leaders,
dreamers, software, electrical, and mechanical engineers, coders, product
managers, project managers, and commercial professionals. We're headquartered
in Northern California, with additional offices across the U.S. and globally.
If this sounds like the kind of challenge that excites you, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior R&D Engineer to lead
the development of cutting-edge industrial IoT products that provide critical
infrastructure for construction automation in the utility-scale solar sector. This is a
hands-on, multidisciplinary engineering role—ideal for individuals who thrive in fast-paced, collaborative startup environments and are passionate about building
impactful, integrated systems from the ground up.
This position requires in-person work at our Davis, California R&D facility. Relocation assistance may be available for highly qualified candidates.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead the design, prototyping, and testing of IoT solutions that support
broader construction automation initiatives, including electrical, mechanical,
and user-facing components.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop integrated
hardware/software systems.
• Provide technical mentorship and day-to-day guidance to a small team of
junior engineers and technicians.
• Partner with the Director of IoT Technologies to define project scopes,
technical approaches, timelines, and deliverables.
• Work with product managers to translate requirements into robust technical
solutions, balancing business goals with engineering best practices.
• Travel occasionally to customer sites for system deployment, field testing,
and troubleshooting.
• Maintain detailed technical documentation and support continuous
improvement in design, implementation, and support processes.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in hardware product development, ideally in a startup
or fast-paced R&D environment.
• Strong foundation in both mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks for mechanical design and simulation.
• Hands-on experience with PCB design, layout, and debugging.
• Deep understanding of power delivery systems and electrical
troubleshooting techniques.
• Familiarity with fabrication technologies such as CNC, 3D printing,
injection molding, and thermoforming.
• Strong shop skills, with a focus on maintaining an efficient, safe, and
productive working environment.
• Knowledge of serial communication protocols (e.g., UART, SPI, I2C) and
hardware/software interfaces.
• Experience designing for performance and durability in rugged or
unconventional environments.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to
work cross-functionally.
• Demonstrated ability to take a technical solution from concept to
productization.
Nice to Have
• Experience with advanced GNSS systems.
• Background in embedded systems integration.
• Familiarity with construction environments (solar industry experience is a
major plus).
• Experience working with wireless communication technologies (e.g., WiFi, LoRaWAN, cellular, satellite).
• Working knowledge of networking concepts
