Job Description

The Division of Environmental Health, part of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, aims to prevent and manage illnesses and injuries caused by environmental and workplace health risks. With a team of 1,000 professionals, the Division conducts outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement across a wide range of areas, including environmental investigations, lead poisoning prevention, occupational health, injury prevention, food safety, childcare, radiation control, water and air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health, and pest management.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene seeks a dedicated and experienced Equine Veterinarian to support its mission of protecting public health through oversight of the city's commercial horse industry. This role focuses on ensuring the health, safety, and humane treatment of horses used in carriage services, rentals, and exhibitions across New York City. You'll play a central role in shaping policy, educating stakeholders, and ensuring the ethical treatment of NYC's working horses.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Conduct inspections of stables and surveys of rental horses in Central Park and other areas throughout New York City.
Investigate complaints related to rental horses and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
Review required documentation, including Certificates of Health for commercially used horses, to verify completeness and legal compliance.
Maintain and update training materials for the Horse Drawn Carriage Operator's course, and administer practical examinations as needed. Monitor the environmental health and safety conditions of licensed horses, enforcing laws that ensure humane working environments.
Educate horse and stable owners on applicable laws, regulations, and rabies prevention requirements for owned animals.
Evaluate animal exposure cases and provide appropriate public health recommendations.
Review health documentation and living conditions for animals involved in exhibit requests, and conduct inspections of those exhibits.
Advise the Department on strategies to enhance industry compliance and animal welfare standards.
Collaborate with veterinarians and other public officials on relevant issues as needed.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited institution
Valid license to practice veterinary medicine in New York State
Experience in equine medicine strongly preferred
Basic knowledge of public health principles and animal welfare regulations
Strong communication and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
