This is an Exempt to Permanent position in accordance with Class-Based Test (CBT) Civil Service Rules. This recruitment is restricted to current exempt employees of the City and County of San Francisco, San Francisco Unified School District, or San Francisco City College, working within the 5364 Engineering Associate I classification.

Job Description

Under general direction, the 5364 Engineering Associate I performs intermediate to advanced technical engineering and/or drafting work in the preparation of civil (including structural and transportation), electrical, or mechanical engineering drawings and other graphic material using computer-aided design and drafting software products and working accurately and in compliance with City agency’s drafting standards.

The essential duties include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Prepares civil (including structural and/or transportation), or electrical, or mechanical engineering drawings and other graphic material using computer-aided design and drafting software products in compliance with City agency’s standards, policies and procedures.
  2. Researches and reviews record drawings to obtain as-built information and conducts engineering investigations; collects and calculates field/departmental data in the preparation of designs and drawings.
  3. Checks and reviews engineering documents and drafting work of other staff for accuracy, engineering sufficiency, and conformance to specifications and standards.
  4. Updates and maintains engineering documents and drawing records.
  5. Conducts site investigations with engineers of existing facilities to determine and verify site layout.
  6. Identifies, develops, and enforces CAD and/or BIM drafting procedures and standards.
  7. Reviews drawing submittals from utility agencies or other City departments and utilizes the information submitted in the preparation of construction drawings.
  8. Coordinates with drafters from other disciplines to maintain project drafting consistency.
  9. Updates Geographic Information System or drawing milestone database at various stages of a project.
  10. Incorporates data from topographical surveys to prepare drawings; and
  11. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must be a Current Category 16, 17, or 18 Exempt Employee in Class 5364 who has worked at least 2,080 hours in Class 5364 with no break in service; AND
  2. Four (4) years of verified civil (including structural /or transportation), or electrical, or mechanical technical engineering drafting experience using CAD or BIM systems to prepare engineering drawings and other engineering graphic material, at least two (2) years of which must have been in a position with duties comparable to those of Class 5362 Engineering Assistant; AND
  3. Possession of a valid California driver license.

Substitution:
Additional education with major coursework in Computer Aided Design and Drafting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of two (2) years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one (1) year; OR

Possession of a current and valid Autodesk Certified Professional & Expert certificate may be substituted for the two (2) of the four (4) years of verified technical engineering drafting experience above.

Note: One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.)

SELECTION PROCEDURES:

Preliminary Questionnaire – Training and Experience Assessment (100% Weight) -During the application process, applicants will be prompted to complete a Preliminary Questionnaire as part of the online employment process. Please answer the Preliminary Questionnaire carefully and thoroughly.  It will serve as the Training and Experience Assessment for this recruitment and will be used to determine your eligibility for this recruitment as well as your score and rank on the eligible list. Qualified applicants will be ranked on the eligible list based on the length of their exempt City service (in Category 16, 17, and/or 18) in the 5364 Engineering Associate I class, along with any additional qualifying points (e.g., promotive status), as outlined in Civil Service Commission (CSC) rules. All work history will be verified using official City records, which will serve as the final authority in determining qualifying service.

NOTE:  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed to advance through all of the steps in the selection process. The department may administer additional position-specific selection procedures to make the final hiring decision.

Additional Information

Eligible List/Score Report: A confidential eligible list of qualifying candidates will be created and used for certification purposes only. A score report will be established, so applicants can view the ranks, final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information, including names of applicants on the eligible list, shall not be made public unless required by law. However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this selection process is subject to change after adoption (e.g., because of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

Certification Rule: The certification rule for this selection process will be Rule of the List.
