Certified Peer Specialist

AthenaPsych is a New York State mental health-approved provider of community mental health services for children, adults, and families with behavioral and emotional challenges. We specialize in individual and group psychotherapy for clients with a focus on trauma-informed care. Athena is dedicated to improving the quality and accessibility of mental health care for all, especially individuals from underserved communities. 


Here at Athena, we pride ourselves on hiring a diverse group of mental health clinicians and staff who are passionate and dedicated to improving our clients’ overall emotional well-being. We provide both in-person and telehealth services for our clients. 


The Peer Specialist uses their own lived experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery to provide hope, support, and mentorship to individuals navigating similar challenges. By building authentic, trusting relationships, the Peer Specialist empowers clients to develop self-advocacy skills, access resources, and work toward their personal goals. This role promotes a culture of respect, dignity, and recovery-oriented care while collaborating with the clinical team to ensure client-centered support.


Responsibilities:
  • Conduct phone and field outreach to help facilitate and develop strong connections with clients and families in need of services.
  • Conduct routine monitoring of patient experiences through assessments and engagement.
  • Relay peer issues of concern to the treatment team and clinical leadership as appropriate.
  • Assist in safety planning as needed.
  • Provide individual peer support and wellness counseling for clients in need. Conduct peer-run support groups as appropriate.
  • Assist in linking clients to services that will assist them in meeting their treatment goals.
  • Play an active role in the development and promotion of the community advisory board.
  • Educate clients and consumers about the agency’s services and benefits.
  • Escort clients to appointments as needed.
  • Work with clients and their treatment teams to help clients gain insight into symptom management and coping skills to support them in their recovery process.
  • Document all client contacts within the electronic health records in a timely fashion.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the supervisor within the scope of practice.


Qualifications:
  • MUST BE CERTIFIED - New York Certified Peer Specialist (NYCPS)
  • Must have experienced mental health concerns themselves and/or have supported family members through their mental health experiences
  • Commitment to Recovery-Oriented Practice
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor
  • Ability to complete work independently as well as in collaboration with team members
  • Must be team-oriented with a willingness to be flexible and helpful
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office a MUST
  • Ability to learn the Electronic Health Record System
  • Highly organized, motivated self-starter
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Spanish Speaking A PLUS


$50,000 - $55,000 a year
Compensation based on years of experience and credentials.

Working Conditions:

The primary work location - Bronx clinic. This is a professional work environment where a computer, desk, chair, and office supplies will be provided in either an office.


Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the role above. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to hear and speak on the phone or through virtual telehealth sessions conducted on a computer throughout the day, stand and sit for an extended period, and be able to write and answer emails in addition to carrying objects no greater than 20 pounds, when needed.
