Staff Airframe/Systems Thermal Engineer

Archer is an aerospace company focused on the development of all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft to advance sustainable air mobility. We are looking for a highly skilled Staff Thermal Engineer to join our Thermal Management Team to optimize the thermal performance of our eVTOL aircraft, ensuring safety and reliability across airframe and vehicle systems.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of heat transfer fundamentals including conduction, convection, and radiation
  • Experience with thermal management of aerospace structures and high-power density systems
  • Proficiency with CFD and FEA software such as NASA Overflow, Fun3D, StarCCM+, Ansys Fluent, Abaqus, and Nastran
  • Experience in thermal testing and correlating test data with models
  • Familiarity with aerospace design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes
  • Programming skills in Python preferred; Matlab/Simulink experience also valuable
  • Strong technical communication and collaboration skills

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed thermal analysis of the airframe considering external and internal heat sources and insulation
  • Develop and implement thermal management solutions for composite airframe structures to mitigate thermal stress and maintain structural integrity
  • Design and optimize cooling solutions for aircraft systems and LRUs to ensure operation within temperature limits
  • Conduct parametric studies and sensitivity analysis to optimize thermal design of aircraft structure and systems
  • Develop, refine, and use CFD and FEA models for simulation and validation of thermal scenarios
  • Support planning and execution of test campaigns for thermal model correlation and validation
  • Collaborate with multiple engineering teams including Aerodynamics, Airframe, Flight Control, Actuation, Avionics, Propulsion, Battery, and Manufacturing
  • Participate in design reviews and document technical analysis and recommendations

Education

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
