Skills
- Demonstrated operational experience applying maritime collision-avoidance rules (COLREGs) in real operations
- Familiarity with autonomous vessel technologies and challenges converting mariner rules to machine logic
- Working knowledge of radar, AIS, GPS, camera, and audio sensors for navigation and situational awareness
- Ability to communicate regulatory concepts to engineers, product managers, and external stakeholders
- Experience with field testing, sea trials, and operational risk assessment
Responsibilities
- Interpret IMO/COLREG guidance and convert requirements into precise, programmable rules for autonomy stacks
- Collaborate with autonomy engineers to implement, test, and validate real-time navigation and collision-avoidance logic
- Advise on handling ambiguous or subjective scenarios, prioritizing safety and operational context
- Develop and maintain documentation on compliance approaches, regulatory updates, and lessons learned from deployments
- Partner with AI and Perception teams to align sensor fusion and situational reasoning with human lookout capabilities
- Support trials, field tests, and post-mission analysis to validate system behaviors in real-world maritime environments
Education
- Bachelor's degree in maritime law, naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, or related field preferred
- Equivalent operational experience (e.g., licensed captain, pilot, or maritime officer) accepted
